The definition of desert is
A huge wave of torrential rain believed to be caused by El Niño is the resposable for this situation. The rainfall on one day in March — 0.96 inches — was the equivalent of approximately 14 years of precipitation, according to The Washington Post. The desert once went more than 14 years without rain in the early 20th century, according to Arizona State University’s School of Geographical Sciences. This storm has brought incredible pain to the Atacama desert zone of Chile causing many floods, left many people homeless and killed many. However bad the situation was, the population was able to see the bright side and recall this exceptional issue as partly good because of the blooming of so many wild flowers.
The floral phenomenon — where dormant seeds bloom in spring after high rainfall events — is known as desierto florido, or flowering desert. From violet-and-white Chilean bell flowers, or “countryside sighs”, to red “lion claws”, to yellow Rhodophiala rhodolirion, they have filled the normally pale desert valleys with rivers of color.
The spectacle will not last for much longer as the landscape is expected to return to normal from November.
